Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal has etched its name in the history books by setting a new world record for the most consecutive wins in men’s soccer. On Tuesday, March 13, 2024, Al-Hilal defeated Al-Ittihad 2-0 in the AFC Champions League, extending their winning streak to an astonishing 28 matches.
The previous record was held by Welsh team The New Saints, who won 27 consecutive matches in the 2016/17 season. Before that, Dutch giants Ajax held the record for 44 years with a 26-game winning streak between 1971 and 1972.
Al-Hilal’s remarkable run began on September 25, 2023, and they have remained undefeated since then. The team’s success has come largely without star player Neymar, who underwent major knee surgery in November.
In Tuesday’s match, Al-Hilal took the lead in the 61st minute through a goal from left-back Yasser Al-Shahrani. Abderrazak Hamdallah was sent off for Al-Ittihad in the 75th minute, and Malcom sealed the victory for Al-Hilal with a goal in stoppage time.
“Everyone at Al Hilal is delighted to achieve world football history by winning 28 consecutive matches,” said manager Jorge Jesus. “This is truly an incredible achievement and I want to thank everyone at the club for their part in this momentous winning record.”
Al-Hilal’s winning streak has not only set a world record but has also propelled them to the top of the Saudi Pro League standings. The team is 12 points clear of Al-Nassr, who signed Cristiano Ronaldo in January.
Al-Hilal will next face Al Ain in the Champions League semifinals after the Emirati side knocked out Al-Nassr on Monday. The team will be looking to continue their winning streak and claim their fifth Asian title.
Bottom Line
According to Guinness World Records, Olympique Lyonnais Féminin holds the record for the most consecutive wins in soccer, men’s or women’s, with 41 victories across all competitions between 2012 and 2013.
