Wanindu Hasaranga Suspended from Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Tests Series 2024

Sri Lanka’s all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been suspended from the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh due to an incident of dissent during the third ODI against the same opposition.

According to an ICC press release, Hasaranga was found guilty of violating Article 2.8 of the Player’s Code of Conduct, prohibiting dissent against an umpire’s decision. The incident occurred during the 37th over of the third ODI when Hasaranga “snatched his cap from one of the umpires and ridiculed the umpiring.”

As a result of this offense, Hasaranga has received a 50% match fee acceptable and three demerit points, bringing his total demerit points to eight. This triggers an automatic two-match suspension, meaning he will miss both Tests against Bangladesh.

This suspension is a significant blow to Sri Lanka’s Test team, as Hasaranga is one of their key players. He had recently come out of Test retirement to join the squad for this series.

In addition to Hasaranga’s suspension, Sri Lanka ODI captain Kusal Mendis was fined 50% of his match fee and received three demerit points for “abusing the umpires while shaking hands with them” at the end of the third ODI.

Bottom Line

The first Test between Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh is scheduled to begin on March 22 in Sylhet. Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis will now lead Sri Lanka’s spin attack. Kamindu Mendis and Nishan Peiris are likely to be brought into the squad to replace Hasaranga.

In the second T20I match between Afghanistan vs Ireland, Rashid Khan played a pivotal role in helping Afghanistan level the three-match series.

Early Setbacks for Afghanistan

Ireland’s bowlers, Mark Adair and Josh Little, made early inroads into Afghanistan’s batting lineup, reducing them to 14 for 4 in the fourth over. However, Mohammad Nabi came to the rescue, forming a crucial 79-run partnership with Sediqullah Atal.

Nabi’s Counterattack

Shane Watson Withdraws from Pakistan Head Coach Race

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has pulled out of the race to become Pakistan’s head coach, according to Cricket Football League.

Watson was reportedly the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) preferred candidate and had been in advanced discussions over the last week. However, he has honored his current coaching and commentary commitments instead.

Watson, who coached Quetta Gladiators in this season’s Pakistan Super League (PSL), was excited by the prospect of working with Pakistan’s talented players. However, the full-time position would have required him to assume charge immediately ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming limited-overs series against New Zealand.

Watson’s decision means Pakistan still needs a head coach ahead of the April five-match T20I series against New Zealand. They are also scheduled to play T20Is against England in May before the T20 World Cup in June.

While news reports in Pakistan suggested that the PCB’s offer to Watson was around US$2 million a year, Cricket Football League Website understands that the figure was closer to half that amount. The financial offer is not believed to have influenced Watson’s decision to withdraw.

The speed at which developments occurred concerning the PCB’s interest in Watson meant that accepting the offer would have necessitated pulling out of his other roles at short notice. This is understood to be the main reason for his withdrawal.

Bottom Line

Watson, who won a PSL title with Gladiators as a player in 2019, has made significant changes to the team as coach, including replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed with Rilee Rossouw as captain. Gladiators started strongly in the PSL but lost momentum towards the end, eventually being eliminated by Islamabad United.

The PCB is now expected to consider other candidates for the head coach position.

Multan Sultans Reach Fourth Successive PSL Final with Seven-Wicket Win Over Peshawar Zalmi

Multan Sultans vs Peshawar Zalmi booked their place in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final for the fourth consecutive year with a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Peshawar Zalmi in the Qualifier on Thursday.

Zalmi’s Struggles with the Bat

Zalmi captain Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first, but his team struggled to find momentum against the Sultans’ bowling attack. David Willey dismissed Saim Ayub in the first over, and Mohammad Haris soon followed, edging Mohammad Ali to the keeper.

Babar top-scored for Zalmi with 46 off 42 balls, but he lacked support from his teammates. Spinners Usama Mir and Iftikhar Ahmed stifled the batters in the middle overs, and Chris Jordan’s variations restricted the scoring in the death overs. Zalmi finished their innings on a below-par 146-7.

Sultans’ Clinical Chase

In response, Sultan’s openers Yasir Khan and Mohammad Rizwan provided a solid foundation with a 61-run partnership. Yasir scored a match-winning 54 off 30 balls, while Usman Khan remained unbeaten on 36.

Iftikhar Ahmed finished the chase with a quick-fire 22 off eight balls, guiding Sultans to victory with nine balls to spare.

Player of the Match

Usama Mir was named Player of the Match for his impressive bowling figures of 2-16 in four overs. His wickets of Babar and Salman Irshad proved crucial in restricting Zalmi’s total.

Road to the Final

Sultans will now await the winner of the Eliminator between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators, who will face Zalmi on Saturday. The final will be played on Monday, March 17.

Sultans will aim to win their second PSL title, while Zalmi will hope to reach the final for the first time since 2019.

Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund Advance to Champions League Quarterfinals

In a thrilling night of Champions League football, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund secured their places in the quarterfinals with hard-fought victories over Inter Milan and PSV Eindhoven, respectively.

Atletico Madrid’s Dramatic Penalty Shootout Triumph

At the Estadio Metropolitano, Atletico Madrid faced an uphill battle after losing the first leg 1-0 to Inter Milan. However, the Spanish side showed resilience and determination, leveling the aggregate score in the first half through Antoine Griezmann’s goal.

Substitute Memphis Depay equalized late in the second half to force extra time, but neither team could find a winning goal. The match went to a penalty shootout, where Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak emerged as the hero.

Oblak saved two penalties, while Lautaro Martinez missed his spot-kick for Inter, handing Atletico a 3-2 victory in the shootout. The Spanish side advances to the quarterfinals for the second time in three years.

Sancho and Reus Lead Dortmund Past PSV

Borussia Dortmund hosted PSV Eindhoven in Germany with a 1-1 draw from the first leg. Jadon Sancho put Dortmund ahead early in the match with a well-taken goal, and Marco Reus sealed the victory in stoppage time.

Dortmund controlled the game for long periods but was wasteful in front of the goal. PSV had their chances, but Luuk de Jong missed a golden opportunity late in the match.

Dortmund’s 2-0 victory on the night gives them a 3-1 aggregate win and a place in the quarterfinals. The German side will be looking to make a deep run in the competition after reaching the final in 2013.

Quarterfinal Draw

The draw for the Champions League quarterfinals will be held on Friday, March 17. In the draw, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will join Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris St Germain, Barcelona, and Arsenal.

The quarterfinals will be played on April 9-10 and April 16-17, with the semifinals scheduled for April 23-24 and April 30-May 1. The final will be played in Istanbul on June 10.
